Glacier Martial provides the backdrop of the town of Ushuaia – the port and Beagle Channel is one side and Glacier Martial and the mountain on the other. The bottom of the glacier, where you start the hike up, is only located 7km from downtown. The walk up the glacier for the most part is fairly easy although it does get a little bit steep towards the end. There were a couple of places where you had to walk through snow (even in the middle of summer) which did get a little slippery. This gives you an opportunity, though, to laugh at those wearing totally inappropriate footwear trying to walk in the snow. That probably sounds really mean and don’t get me wrong I love a good pair of heels as much as the next girl but hiking in them… Not the smartest move!
The view from the top of the glacier is pretty awesome right over the city and across the Beagle to Isla Navarino. It started to rain when I got to the top but you can still see the views from different places along the way.
