One thing Patagonia is known for is its winds. I have never in my life experienced winds like I did in Patagonia. When I went I had the greatest intention of kayaking when I could. Unfortunately I was in Patagonia for months before that chance arose.
Lago Equyen is a large lake dedicated to non-motorized boats near El Bolson (a chill hippie town 3 hours' bus ride south of Bariloche). The trip was a full day adventure and included not only a fantastic Argentinian BBQ but also homemade scones with homemade jam for afternoon tea. All the kayaks had pedals to steer due to the wind and were in great condition. Our guides (and chefs) were father and son team of Miguel and Pedro. Miguel didn't speak English but chatting to him in my Spanglish was amusing and they were both great.
At one point during lunch I thought we might have to abort our day as the winds picked up, but by the time we had finished eating and had visited a waterfall they had died off again and we were able to continue. The beautiful Patagonian scenery made it a fantastic place for a paddle and it was a really enjoyable day. This is also suited to beginner kayakers as I was with some people who have never kayaked before and they enjoyed themselves immensely (once they got the hang of the steering)!
