Rich cultural atmosphere, frenetic nightlife, world class cuisine, modern design, colonial architecture, contemporary fashion...would you expect anything less from an autonomous urban center that holds the distinction of being Argentina's capital city? With a little bit of everything at your disposal, it's easy to become intoxicated with Buenos Aires' unique charm: a cosmopolitan city that moves to a sensual rhythm all its own. Much like the Tango to which it gave birth, BA masks its deceptive complexity and originality behind the familiar bustle of cities the world over. Look closer, however, and you'll discover that it's anything but.
Why not start your exploration with a romp around the headstones in famed Cementerio de la Recoleta? Sure it's a bit crowded at times, but there's a good reason for that. Afterwards, pose for pictures with Regimiento de Patricios officers in the Plaza de Mayo, pick up a few trendy souvenirs for the folks back home in Palermo Soho or just kick back with a glass of Malbec and catch a tango show in old town San Telmo. This is a city that thrives on culture in all forms and fashions, and food and drink are certainly no exception. Vegetarians take note - you've entered a city that revels in the tastes of sumptuous red meats. Why not give in to your carnivorous cravings and grab a slab of open-air grilled steak (parrilla) before heading out for a night of extreme partying in any of Buenos Aires' posh (or seedy) nightclubs? The country's delicious wine makes for an easy transition from dining to dance-mode, after all.
And it's a good thing BA's cultural offerings are so plentiful, since its opportunities for outdoor excitement (especially when compared to the rest of the country) borders on paltry. Sure you've got the Tigre Delta nearby, and a couple waterside national parks within a few hours' drive (Campos del Tuyu and El Palmar); overall, however, none of these are particularly memorable. Still, when all is said and done, there's so much to see, taste, touch and experience in Argentina's capital it's no wonder the city has gained a notorious reputation for converting curious visitors into lifelong residents. Don't say we didn't warn you.
