30 km (18 miles) north of Buenos Aires lies the town of Tigre, situated along the Parana River. In a city with limited access to the kinds of natural spectacles that can be found elsewhere in the country, this has become something of a favorite destination for the BA adventurous. It's delta, named for the jaguars that once roamed this area in abundance, encompasses 14,000 sq. km. of islands, inlets and rivers, offering plenty of opportunities to get out on the water and explore. Try skipping the guided boat tour and instead opting for a single or multiple day kayak excursion up the Parana (check out our links for suggestions).
Tigre is easily accessible from Buenos Aires via either road or the scenic 45 minute ride along the Tren de la Costa. And don't let its newly rediscovered "upper class" atmosphere fool you: there's still plenty of authentic adventuring to be had here.
