Moreton Island is the 3rd largest sand island in the world and is situated off the coast of South East Queensland. During the world wars the island was one of Australia's major defence bases. The base was used to protect the approach to Brisbane through its port.
Cowan Cowan Point was the main base during World War I, while the second World War saw a large defence battery complexes at Cowan Cowan. These 2 large concrete structures were used as a gun/cannon firearm base and are now known to locals as "the gun" or "cannon." In September of 1996, one of the guns/cannons collapsed, but they both now lay partly in sand with access now being prohibited. However you can still see the evidence of the weaponry that was at home there.
In my opinion, the beach in front of the guns/cannons is one of the best on the island and also a fantastic place to view a stunning sunset over the bay with a cold beer or a glass of wine.
The area is also known for its fishing.
