A popular district due to its waterfront location, St. Kilda is notable for an abundance and variety of dining establishments, as well as the full monty of late night hang-outs. On the dining end of the spectrum, the mix of cheaper burger joints and cafes (particularly around Carlisle and Fitzroy Streets) and more expensive steakhouses (try Fitzrovia on Fitzroy) provides something for everyone. On the nightlife end, there are a ton of bars and hotels around Fitzroy Street before it hits St. Kilda Beach and becomes the Esplanade. Acland Street, in the few blocks between Carlisle and Barkly, also offers a large number of night-time hot spots.
Note:Nightlife fixtures include the Local Taphouse on Carlisle (tons of microbrews on tap), the Esplanade Hotel on Esplanade (great music and expensive drinks), and Barney Allen's on Fitzroy (delicious burgers and beer).
