The lone city of over a million people in Western Australia, Perth is often overlooked by travelers due to the popularity of cities in the south and west of the country. For adventurers, it would be a mistake to assume that there is little to be excited about in this part of the world, especially when desert monoliths and submerged worlds beckon.
Within the Perth city limits is the excellent Kings Park, while within a half an hour's drive are about a dozen national parks and nature reserves that will serve your need for a quick day-hike. For the snorkelers and divers amongst you, you'll need to head out to Rottnest Island or take a road trip up the coast to Coral Bay to access Ningaloo Reef, which has a preponderance of stellar marine life. If you've come this far north, then don't bypass the epic limestone gorges and canyons of Cape Range National Park.
Beach lovers don't have to go so far, for there are great locations near Perth that include Cottesloe and Scarborough, both of which are popular, well-kept, and don't get nearly as crowded as the beaches in other heavily populated areas of Australia. For those willing to travel a little more, the beaches to the south in the Margaret River wine country tend to be great for surfing, especially Yallingup and Surfer's Point.
The more adventurous should head inland toward the various geological oddities that this part of the country is known for. Whether you're checking out Wave Rock (yup, a big, wave-shaped rock), the Pinnacles (hundreds of stalagmite-like rocks in Nambung National Park), or even Lake Ballard (no water here, just salt), there are plenty of intriguing possibilities. Because of its isolation, the phrase “road trip” is going to have to come in to play if you want to see some of the remote and beautiful attractions that this part of Australia has to offer; for those of you who've had your best experiences with less of a plan and more of the ingenuity of the open road, then the ghost towns of gold rushes long gone and dusty thoroughfares of Western Australia's past are calling.
Or you can stick around Perth, for there's plenty to occupy your time off without having to ritualistically burn your itinerary and stuff everyone into a clunker destined for the middle of nowhere. Not that abandoning restriction and routine wouldn't be an incredibly freeing experience.
