Named after a ubiquitous little penguin population, this island, 45 minutes south of Perth and reachable by both ferry and boat, is one of the best ways to be in contact with the smallest penguins on Earth. There are rangers on hand in the Discovery Center to help with your experience and boardwalks for moving about the island. There is also a sizable pelican population, as well as various coves, beaches, and underwater caves.
Penguin Island is not open to travelers during the winter (July-August), and it doesn't have the tourist amenities you may usually expect from a tourism experience (restaurants, cafes, gift shops, etc.), so plan accordingly.
