The voyage to the Lamanai ruins is almost as fantastic as the archaeological site itself. The boat ride up the New River has tons of wildlife on display, including a variety of birds (avid bird watchers, this is your treat), monkeys and some snakes if you're lucky. The whole experience is made even better with some black mangoes and a few Belikin beers. Once you dock, your guide leads you on a hike through the jungle, telling stories about Mayan history until you reach Lamanai. You can tour and climb up a number of ancient stone structures like the Jaguar Temple for incredible views of Belize and the rain forest below. It's truly unbelievable that only a small portion of this site has actually been discovered! You'll definitely want to bring a camera and a hat, and be prepared for an amazing Central American experience.
