If you’re looking for an authentic tropical locale that lies within the Amazon River basin, there is no better place than Alter do Chao. It is best to go from July to January, when the tides are at their lowest, so that the sandy island of Isla do Amor rises above the sparkling water between the Tapajos River and Lago Verde. The beaches are very nice, but don’t make that the sole point of your trip when you’ve got much more accessible coastline elsewhere in Brazil. Instead, Alter do Chao should serve as the basis for further exploration of the Amazon Rainforest, whether it is a day trip up the Tapajos or even further, with Manaus about a two day trip away by boat.
Note:The nearest airport is in nearby Santarem. From there, your best bet for transport is a taxi. Everything in town can be reached on foot and, if you’re willing, the greater Amazon can be explored through local ecotourism. Also, when swimming, be sure to watch out for stingrays in the water. The best way to avoid being stung is to shuffle your feet when touching down.
