Although Fortaleza is a great hub from which to find a day trip's worth of sun and sand up and down the coast, there are also some excellent beaches within the city for those who don't want to stray too far. Our favorite is Praia do Futuro.
Although a good taxi ride from where you'll probably be staying (not worth footing it because of dangerous neighborhoods), this 5 km (3.1 mile) stretch of beach is known for consistent surf breaks and a breeze that does well to combat the summer heat. There are plenty of barracas, which are beach shacks of varying size, seating, shade, and affordability along the shore that often specialize in different food, drink, and atmosphere. To be perfectly honest, there may not be a better area in Fortaleza in which to indulge in a day of leisurely beverages and delicious seafood and the options are numerous. We suggest you put your money here, instead of walking vendors or others who may not be worth your trust.
Futuro is also your best bet for swimming since it is often discouraged at both Iracema and Meireles due to water quality.
Note:From north to south, here are some of the more popular barracas along the beach: Barraca Terra do Sol, Chico do Caranguejo, Barraca Itapariká, and Barraca Arpão.
