An upscale neighborhood between downtown Fortaleza and Praia do Futuro, Varjota is your best choice away from the beach to enjoy high quality cuisine and nightlife. There are a few big shopping malls in the area, making for quick and easy access to restaurants: Buganvília and Patio Dom Luis both have a fine selection of more than your usual fast food and are located within a block of each other. You'll also find that Rua Júlio Abreu and Rua Ana Bilhar provide access to more than a handful of high-end eateries.
Nightlife in Varjota consists of a bunch of hip little bars, a relaxed vibe that also seeps into the eastern part of the adjacent Meireles neighborhood. Docentes e Decentes (huge, covered patio) on Ana Bilhar, Picanha do Cowboy (saloon-style) on Dom Luís, and Butiquim Bar (live music and big screens) are all quality destinations for drinks and conversation. If you're at a loss, take a walk around where Rua Frederico Borges and Rua Ana Bilhar converge; you'll undoubtedly find an establishment that interests you. This is the rare neighborhood in Fortaleza where English-speakers won't be made to feel unwelcome while being off-the-beaten-path enough where you will be mingling with mostly locals.
