Named “Cold Cape” for the cold submarine current that jettisons here from the South Pole, Cabo Frio is one of a seemingly endless list of cities notable for its beach lifestyle. We get it, Brazil, your beaches are awesome.
Located 148 km (92 miles) from Rio de Janeiro, this hip area in the lake district is known for its many surf and swim boutiques, its sand dunes, and (of course) the beaches. The best and far and away the most popular is Praia Forte, named after the 17th century fort of Sao Mateus that lies at one end of its 4 km (2.5 mile) white sand expanse. On a hot, summer day, all you’ll see are the many colorful umbrellas packed in together on the sand.
Along with other locales of the lake district, Cabo Frio is a great place for a day trip if you’re staying in or around Rio de Janeiro.
