At its inaugural match in the 1950 World Cup, the Estadio de Maracana had the largest spectator capacity at nearly 200,000. Today, it is still one of the premiere football arenas in the world, hosting numerous Brazilian club matches and huge concerts. It has recently undergone renovations in seating and roof construction in the preparation to host both the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. There is no grander place to see Brazilians embracing their favorite sport and cheering for local club favorites like Fluminense, Flamengo, Botafogo, and Vasco de Gama, some of which participate in both the city and national A-leagues.
