The beating commercial and financial heart of Sao Paulo, Avenida Paulista is one of the busiest streets during the week anywhere in Latin America. If you want to walk in the shadows of a metal and concrete skyline a la 5th Avenue in New York City, then this is where you should find yourself strolling down the street.
Once an avenue lined with the mansions of coffee barons, the street has gone almost completely vertical as major corporate headquarters have sprung up to match the financial growth of Sao Paulo. Although other streets deliver the culture and nightlife of Sao Paulo without the frenetic pace, there is no other street that connects the old town of Sao Paulo and booming, corporate metropolis of new Sao Paulo in such literal and figurative ways. Do yourself the favor of walking this 2.8 km symbol of Sao Paulo at least once, even if you're on your way to somewhere else. Just make sure you pack ibuprofen for all the neck stiffness.
