Take a hike to these glacial lakes situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains, the highest mountain range the Balkans and the highest peak Musala at 9,596 ft. The lakes are situated between 6,890 and 8,202 feet elevation one above the other and are connected by small streams, which form tiny waterfalls and cascades. The best time to visit is 19 August when you can observe “paneurhythmy”, a ritual performed by pilgrims of the White Brotherhood from across the world in celebration of their New Year. The ritual consists of rhythmic choreographed dancing in widening circles, creating a memorable scene on the fields below the mountain. If you happen to go any other time, the circles are visible from the mountain top, as well as all 7 lakes.
