Although Siem Reap is most well known for Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, the beautiful Phnom Kulen National Park is also a wonderful day trip that should not be missed. Sixty km from Siem Reap, this park is accessible by car or motorbike. There are some interesting sites within this park as well. First is a large waterfall set in a jungle with the option of swimming in the river. There is also a nearby river and within it you can see ancient lingas carved into the bedrock. Further up from the river is a natural and sacred spring with the clearest water imaginable. Finally, you will see a large pagoda with a huge reclining Buddha carved into a mountaintop. The pagoda is very active with many pilgrims and locals praying daily. The road to and from this park, especially by motorbike, is also an interesting and cultural experience. You will see many small villages and witness a lot of eye-opening rural poverty.
