For those that love the outdoors, there are few places on Canada's western seaboard like the city of Nanaimo. Located on Vancouver Island, about 55 km (34 miles) across the Strait of Georgia from Vancouver, Nanaimo is home to a beautiful waterfront, a handful of great summer-time beaches, some incredible walking trails along Westwood Lake and up Mount Benson, and its world-famous bathtub boat race in July of every year.
Yet these aren't what merit Nanaimo's inclusion on our list. For the scuba divers among us, whether casual or hardcore, this is the place to be. The most popular dive site includes 3 artificial reefs of varying experience levels, the most prominent of which is the HMCS Cape Breton, a 400 foot WWII ship that is recognized as the second largest diver-readied site in the world.
Also of interest is Snake Island, where divers and snorkelers can coexist with the Harbour Seals that frequent the area. There are plenty of local dive operators, some of which we've included links to, so choose which looks best and continue on your path to adventure.
