Just outside of downtown is an urban park on par with some of the great stretches of urban greenery in the world: Stanley Park. Larger than New York City's Central Park, much of the area still contains natural growth forest, as well as various monuments and totems, a freshwater lake (Beaver Lake), the Vancouver Aquarium, and an 18-hole par 3 golf course. The most popular attraction is the Vancouver Seawall, an 8.8 km (5.5 mile) walking/cycling/skating path that encircles the park and gives some great views of the city and the water.
For the more adventurous, less time-constrained traveler, the Seawall does extend another 13.2 km (8.2 miles) to Kitsilano Beach. Either way, Stanley Park is unrivaled in Vancouver for green space and convenience, and should find its way onto your agenda.
