The Atacama desert is one of the driest places in the world with less than 10 mm of rain per year. Since surfing and snowboarding are out of the question, the next best thing is sandboarding. The sand dunes that lie near San Pedro de Atacama through the Valle de la Muerte are tall and perfect for this activity. If it's too hot for you during the day, an even more exciting option is to try late-night sandboarding. Certain companies will set up spotlights, or use the light of a full moon to help light your way. There will be music blasting and Pisco Sours flowing freely as you board under the dark starry desert sky.
Boards and bikes can be rented in town, or alternatively a tour can be arranged with transport. Make sure to dress warmly at night and light during the day.
