The biggest tourist draw on Lantau Island, Ngong Ping is known for its exhilirating, 5.7 km (3.5 mile) cable car ride and its claim to fame, the Tian Tan Buddha, the world's largest outdoor Buddha statue. Beginning in Tung Chung, the cable car will take you to the 34 meter (112 foot) tall statue, the Po Lin Monastery, and the tourist-centered attraction, the Ngong Ping Village. This themed village attempts to retain the cultural integrity of the area with local performances, "Monkey's Tale Theatre", and a multimedia journey of Siddhartha's path to Buddhism. If on a budget, we suggest bypassing the the village and enjoying the free attractions like the statue and monastery. Also, a single trip on the cable car itself is $109 HK (about $14 US).
Note:There are also a number of nature walks and waterfalls available to those who are in the area and don't feel up to a cable car trip and the often contrived cultural vision of theme villages created for tourists.
