One of the more popular extreme adventures to be found within a day trip of Lhasa is whitewater rafting on Drigung Chu. Located about 2 hours from the city, this river is a combination of class 3 and 4 rapids that covers over 50 km (31 miles) of extreme adventure. The appeal of such an adventure lies in the fact that a human being can take on a torrential rush of water in nearly any corner of the world, from the backwaters of Upstate New York to the a stronghold of Tibetan Buddhism like Lhasa and it boils down to the same thing- the elation of pitting yourself against nature
There are a handful of tour operators that include this activity in their potential itineraries, so we suggest speaking to a few to see how whitewater rafting can fit into your plans. We've included a few operators for your convenience.
Note:Any activity that involves an increased heart rate should only be undertaken once you've become accustomed to the high elevation; otherwise, you could become ill and it would really ruin your trip! Also, there is a nunnery (Tidrum) and hot springs located nearby; a worthy stop for a quick dip.
