The commercial center of Lhasa, Barkhor Street is where you'll find everything from throwaway bronze statues of laughing Buddha to broadswords (which we'd advise against packing in your carry-on). There are hundreds of shops and stalls here in this ancient street that encircles the famous pilgrimage destination, the Jokhang Temple. We suggest bringing your bargaining skills, your patience with large tourist crowds, and a discerning eye, for this is where unique items like the world famous Tibetan carpet may be purchased. You know you've been looking for that rug that really ties the room together.
Note:The most notable marketplace in the area is called Tromzikhang, located behind the facade of a demolished building. If at a loss on where to start, this is a good a choice as any.
