The Old Town of Shuhe (束河古城 – shu he gu cheng) is the smaller and more mellow counterpart to the Old Town of Lijiang. Shuhe offers a very similar experience to the Lijiang Old Town, but the atmosphere is more leisurely with more foliage and scenery to enjoy. If you're seeking a quiet afternoon decompression after a long night out or perhaps a calm evening before a big trek, Shuhe Old Town is a great spot to visit.
You'll find plenty of fruit stands, juices, and snack vendors to keep you full the entire time. The area is also more spread out than the Lijiang Old Town, so you'll find several larger sit-down restaurants with outdoor patios, making for a good afternoon meal or tea stop.
But what really makes the Shuhe Old Town special is the abundance of talented vendors focused on original artwork and unique creations as opposed to just reselling a factory-made item at an unnecessary markup. If you are looking to capture a piece of Lijiang to take home with you, this would be the spot.
