A village on the outskirts of Shanghai, Zhujiajiao is notable for its many waterways and ancient buildings that still serve as residential homes. The best way to see the area is to walk along the many bridges and waterways, stopping to enjoy the Qing and Ming dynasty architecture. You may also take a boat tour through the area put on by a tour group called Zhujiajiao Scenic Spot, which takes you to the pertinent landmarks in town. This is the best preserved water town that you'll find near a large city in China, and a necessary stop to satiate your cultural curiosity.
Note:Long a hidden gem in the tourist world, Zhujiajiao is undergoing some current modernization. For example, the town square has become a large shopping area meant to capitalize on tourism.
