The thought of climbing 740 steps up anything makes me give an involuntary shudder. However, when I'm promised arguably one of the best views in Colombia at the top, I get my exercise on!
Guatapé is a gorgeous, colourful town located about 2 hours by bus from Medellin. The town sits on the man-made dam of Peñol-Guatapé. It was built for its hydro-electric power. About 1 km from town is a monolithic formation that stands out above all else. Standing at 2,135 m above sea level is La Piedra del Peñol.
The steps have been built into the rock, so they are very safe and secure. At the top of the rock there is a viewing platform which gives amazing 360 degree views of the area. There is also a place at the top to buy a beer and reward yourself for climbing all 740 steps!
