Not far from Republic Square on ul. Marmontova is the daily Split Fish Market, which stands in stark contrast to the tourist-saturated daily market closer to Diocletian's Palace. Here from 6:30 am - 2 pm, fishermen weigh out their freshly-caught mackerels, eels, and countless other Adriatic inhabitants for your gastronomic pleasure, occasionally while simultaneously (and impressively) smoking the tail end of a cigarette. Needless to say, this is not the place for Purell-carrying mysophobes. If you enjoy local traditions and bargain seafood prices, however, this is the market for you. Best catches are sold early, but come during the last couple hours and you may just pick up a great deal on the stragglers.
