If Viking history with its gritty, seafaring heroes and legendary, far-reaching conquests get your blood pumping or if you've merely got that remnants of Norse ancestry in your veins, then Lindholm Hoje should be at the top of your Danish agenda. Located outside the city of Aalborg, this viking burial ground (the largest in Scandinavia) has gravestones dating as far back as 400 AD, providing a bit of hard reality to the caricatures of these people often perpetrated in tv and film. The remains of Viking villages have been found here as well, with some rock foundations still intact. There is also a visitor's center and cafe, as well as a museum that notably holds artifacts of local prehistory that would be of interest to anyone looking for a true glimpse into Viking culture.
Even better than artifacts are the faux battles in full regalia, as well as other less glorified aspects of Viking life that are reenacted every June for the Viking Festival.
