A few miles north of London, you'll be surprised to find a whole lot of open space and solitude in an area called Hampstead Heath. For the contemplative adventurer, you have bridge-spanned ponds and stout, meadowed hills. For the active traveler, there is an outdoor pool, a running track, and almost 800 acres of space for every outdoor activity you could imagine. There is a small, free zoo, and an abundance of bird and plant life throughout the heath, another draw for nature lovers.
Thankfully for many, city planners and developers kept in mind that both locals and travelers will need a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of London. It won't blow your mind as an extreme alternative to the much more famous Hyde Park, but Hampstead Heath is still a solid place to get outdoors.
