Ever felt like taking in a view of the Biscay coast and French countryside from atop the tallest sand dune in Europe? Then take the short 60km (37 mile) drive southwest of Bordeaux to the Great Dune of Pyla (or Pilat), which rises 107 meters (351 ft) above scenic Arcachon Bay. Tackle the sandy hike up to the top and you're rewarded with an incredible view, which is said to reach all the way to Pyrenees on clear summer days.
However, if that's not quite exciting/rewarding enough for you, maybe this will pique your interest; sandboarding (along with snowboarding during the sometimes-snowy winter months) is becoming an incredibly popular activity on the super fine grains of Pilat, making for a more tiring trek to the top, but a much more thrilling journey down. Enjoy.
