Like most of the landscape surrounding Bordeaux, the Landes de Gascogne regional nature park is pretty tame by adventurous standards. That said, if mountain biking along an abandoned railroad track through the largest artificial forest in Western Europe or paddling a kayak the length of the Leyre River spark your interest, you're in the right place.
Covering an area of 315,000 hectares, hiking, camping, horseback riding, and a host of other activities are available within the park's far-reaching borders. For all you ornithologists out there, there's even an impressive bird sanctuary (parc ornithologique du Teich) that offers prime wildlife viewing near Arcachon Bay. Take your time and make a camping trip out of it, or just check out the scenery for the day. Located only 40 minutes away from the city, it works either way.
