At 1.2 km, rue Sainte-Catherine is the longest pedestrian shopping street in Bordeaux, and one of the longest in Europe. While it's been criticized by some for constituting little more than an outdoor shopping mall in the American tradition, this busting corridor of commodities has much more to offer than just shopping. First, it connects two of the city's most prominent attractions, the Grande Theater and the Place de la Victoire, which is immensely helpful on any cultural tour of the city. Second, should you feel like walking the street without the need to purchase anything, there are plenty of cafes to duck into which allow for fantastic people watching. An excellent place to see, be seen, and even meet a few new friends.
