Covering an area of 65,000 hectares (160,000 acres), the moderately mountainous Pilat Regional Nature Park provides a wealth of adventure opportunities just 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Lyon. For anyone looking to incorporate some rugged hiking into their French vacation, you've got 600 km of it to choose from here. Trails like the Tour to Parc (180 km) can take upwards of a 7-10 days to complete, winding you through some excellent French countryside and elevations that range from 200 to 1500 meters above sea level. Don't worry, though; plenty of scenic sections can be done in just a day or two.
Prefer a different method of exploration? No problem. Riders have a wide variety of available horse and bike trails to choose from, including plenty of high quality runs down the 1,432 m Mont Pilat. Come winter, this massif offers some challenging and energizing skiing to round out the seasons.
