One of the best preserved slices of Medieval Europe left standing today, a walk through Lyon's Old City (Le Vieux Carre) gives visitors the opportunity to experience a section of France as it stood over 1000 years ago. Well, not quite; we highly doubt medieval Lyon had the concentration of bars, restaurants and shops that you can find strolling down the likes of Rue Saint-Jean and Quai Rolland. Still, this is a close to authentic as you're likely to get in France. As you meander, be sure to take a few minutes to investigate cool architectural landmarks like the Romanesque columns of the Palais de Justice and the towering Lyon Cathedral in Place Saint-Jean. You can also check out some of the arrondissement's traboules, or "secret" multi-purposed passageways that date back hundreds of years. It's a relatively small area, so why not set aside an hour or two and do it justice, hm?
