Kourou is home to the Centre Spatial Guyanais which is a French and European spaceport. The port is used to conduct launches to the International Space Station using Automated Transfer Vehicles.
If you are lucky and apply early enough you can view the launches from the Spaceport. For those of us who don't know where we will be that far in advance are left to watch the launch for an observation hill approximately 20 km from the launch site.
There is several TVs set up on the hill so you are able to hear the countdown before you see the massive ball of light lift off. Given that we were only 20 km away I was surprised that it took over 30 seconds for the sound to hit us, which was incredible!
