Concerning nightlife, there are an exceptional number of beer gardens and clubs spread throughout Mitte; the beer gardens are for your drinking at any hour and the clubs don't have a soul in them until about 1am on the weekend. Areas of interest northeast of the Spree River include Hackescher Markt (superclub Trust and a lot of nice bars) and Torstrasse until it reaches Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz (Eschschloraque and CCCP are popular hangouts). South of the river and Museuminsel, Köpenicker Strasse has a great line-up of dance clubs and beer gardens in the area.
A large district, Mitte has quite a variety of cuisines to match. Alte Schönhauser Strasse to Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz has the variety, flavor, and ease on the wallet, while the nearby intersection of Torstrasse and Rosenthaler Strasse also has an exceptional concentration of choices. The few blocks that surround the Gendarmenmarkt also have a surprising number of good restaurants, so we won't judge if you decide not to set out for the suburbs in search of a genuine experience.
