In Europe, it is estimated that there are 11 million empty homes - and 4.1 million homeless people. Something about that maths doesn't seem to fit right and those figures don't even take into account unfinished building projects that were underfunded or homes that were destroyed to push up prices of existing housing. With a sleeping bag, you can take advantage of this unfortunate situation and have a great adventure all at the same time - for free.
This particular barn is in northern Germany and while cycling across Europe, we used it to shelter from the rain, prepare food in, then sleep.
In the farmland north-west of Dortmund, you will find a large collection of abandoned farm buildings, often spaced as little as a few hundred metres apart - take your pick! The one pictured is a few kilometres outside of Recklinghausen. Make sure you leave everything as you found it and watch out for the feces of the previous inhabitants - cows.
