A cultural blending point due to its position bordering Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, Lake Constance is the destination of both the country's Rhine River and many vacationers from across Europe during the summer months. Sure, it doesn't have the spectacular vistas of the Alps further south into Switzerland and Austria, but the third largest lake in Central Europe is a big draw for its unique cultural underpinnings and a healthy dose of summertime adventure.
There are a number of towns and villages in the area that cater to travelers with everything from trendy cafes, thousand year old cathedrals, and harbors brimming with sailboats and distant, mountain-strewn horizons. And that's just in Konstanz. Head to the eastern shore of Friedrichshafen for another cultural institution, the Zeppelin Museum, which is home to a massive, full-scale recreation of the Hindenburg, the largest flying machine ever built.
As you know, it is not all about the churches and museums when it comes Embark. The best way to see all the sights on your own terms and work up a good sweat is via the Lake Constance cycle route, which consists 273 paved km (170 miles) and touches on every worthwhile resort town and medieval city center, including highlights like Friedrichsafen, Konstanz, Lindau, and Wasserburg. Most towns will have a promenade where you can watch the sailboats cross the water and a harbor where you can find your way onto a boat or ferry between the months of April and October. If you want to enjoy these crisp, foggy shores during the winter, however, you'll find that many of the tourist amenities will be closed down. Plan accordingly!Lastly, although there aren't too many hikes in the area beyond footing it between lakeshore towns, you should attempt to take in some of the best views of the area, head up to Marienschlucht. This lookout point near the Konstanz Golf Club is a series of 30 m cliffs that can be accessed by a long set of wooden steps after a walk or canoe ride from the nearby town of Wallhausen (about 4 km).
