Built by Romans over 2200 years ago, this sandstone landmark has stood the test of war and time. “The Black Gate” in Latin, it is the only one of four defensive gates still standing in the small town of Trier. We suggest visiting the attached museum and getting a guidebook if you plan on understanding what is said during the tour, unless your German is good, of course.
If you are interested in the rare, lasting ruins of ancient history, especially in the intriguing context of a modern tourist town, then the Porta Nigra is worth a trip.
Note:Trier is about a 3 hour drive from both Stuttgart and Frankfurt, making it a fantastic day trip opportunity from either location.
