This Bavarian fortress overlooks the city of Wurzburg and the river Main and has done so in some form since the 8th century. Travelers first walk across the old bridge, a magnificent structure in its own right that exhibits a number of stone sculptures. From there, you can drive, ride, or walk to the entrance along an incline that can be strenuous for some walkers.
Inside, there is a museum, a church, a courtyard, and the lovely Prince's Gardens, all worth a leisurely stroll. Our favorite part was the view from the battlement walls of the city below and the surrounding countryside.
Note:Entrance to the fortress and museum are discontinued during the winter.
