It won't take more than an hour or two exploring Quetzaltenango on foot to realize that there's really only one "entertainment district" you need to know about: Zona Viva. As the name implies, this is the city's lively quarter, located smack dab in the heart of Zona 1 (roughly between Avenues 12 and 15A and Streets 3A and 6A). As far as restaurants and cafes go, you can take your pick, from freshly-baked bread and delicious coffee at Xelapan and the hip new Cafe Lounge to reasonably priced pizza and crepes at live music-friendly Sabe Delis. If you're looking to take things late into the night (and this is a relative expression, since bars here close at 1 am), consider starting off at the popular Salón Tecún. It's located inside Parque Central's famed Pasaje Enriquez building, and is where you're likely to find a healthy crowd of locals and travelers drinking at sizable wooden tables and prepping for the evening ahead. From here, just head west towards any bar or club that strikes your fancy, including the popular La Parranda Disco. The action usually picks up mid-week and continues through the weekend, so bring a good attitude and come prepared for a entertaining night.
