Long a performance art enjoyed by the sophisticates amongst us and therefore discarded by the rest of us Plebeian, the opera to a world traveler should just be viewed as another opportunity for cultural immersion. Where best to immerse thyself, dear traveler? La Scala would be an excellent choice.
A world-renowned opera and ballet house built in the 18th century, La Scala has seen the best performers of the last two centuries grace its stage and continues to put on only the best dramatic presentations. With an interior that will remind you of every opera scene in every film you've seen and a museum of performance-related instruments and history, you'll want to try the opera or ballet at La Scala at least once.
Ticket prices range from 15 to 210 Euro ($20 to $280 USD) and can be purchased online, at the Duomo, or at the theater box office, although we'd suggest inquiring early because shows do sell out. Also, there are a limited number of gallery tickets available two-and-a-half hours before each show at the theater box office.
