The Outameni Experience is a cultural attraction located in Trelawny (about two hours from Negril and actually much closer to Montego Bay). Meaning "come together" in the native Taino language, Outameni is an opportunity for travelers to see some of the ethnic and cultural roots of the island on full display.
With six uniquely designed villages that represent the peoples of Jamaica, you'll have a chance to see native garb, enjoy indigenous food and dance, and learn a lot about how Jamaica came to be what it is today. Tours run every half an hour for about an hour and a half each.
Sure, this is about as close to authentic, exciting Jamaica as a lounge chair next to the resort swimming pool. Sadly, despite the conjured nature of the experience, it's one of the rare celebrations of Taino culture on the island and its much safer than the "authentic" (and potentially dangerous) interactions in Kingston neighborhoods like Trenchtown or Tivoli Gardens.
