In inland Jamaica's Nassau Valley lies the Appleton Rum Estate, home to the world famous Appleton Distillery since 1749. If you're a fan of rum that's good for sipping or just want to follow the tourist route through the country's alcohol-related history, the estate tour is an excellent option. That being said, the drive from any of the resorts is usually a good couple of hours, so you may have to make a day of it.
The tour consists of the distillery and grounds, as well as an explanation of the distillation process throughout history. Our favorite part, of course, is the tasting room at the end where you can sample all that you want, including a mango variety. You might as well pick up a bottle here too, because although the tour cost will be a little steep (at least $70 USD a person), the rum is inexpensive on site.
Note:Tours operate and depart from Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and beyond; ask your hotel or hostel for assistance or look online for further tour info.
