Though it has neither Nairobi's cosmopolitan feel nor its varied entertainment selection, the worn streets of downtown Mombasa still offer a variety of things to do for those adventurous enough to leave the comfort of the beach and check them out. Along perpetually congested Moi Ave you've got a selection of restaurants to choose from, including The Castle Royal (better appreciated for its food than its rooms), Casablanca, the Fontanella Steakhouse/Beer Garden and the Bella Vista. Come nightfall (especially on weekends) just about all of these places will have made the transition to late-night "hot spots," though attendance can be a bit shaky at times and there's a strong contingent of working girls pretty much year round. A little further south along Mama Ngina Drive, the massive Florida Nightclub and Casino continues Kenya's longstanding love affair with this popularly overpriced entertainment chain. Overall, the options here are limited but, if you time your visit right and know where you're going, downtown can make for some excellent Mombasa memories.
