Well, you asked for nightlife, so here it is. Mtwapa is sort of like Mombasa's kid brother to the north; you know, the one who's a little messier, a little less developed and a lot more prone to getting in trouble. A haven for expats and backpackers fed up with the beach-side resort scene, this fast paced little town is well known for its high intensity nightlife, which runs the gamut from almost-upscale clubs to seedy adult-themed establishments (best to be avoided).
Pretty much all the action is situated either on or just off the main strip (called Malindi Rd or the B8), which is where you'll find places like Kendas Arcade, the Casaurina Nomad Bar and Club Lambada. Since it's a town you can expect to stumble across plenty of inexpensive eateries as well, but the rule of thumb is that one doesn't make the drive all the way to Mtwapa solely for the food. Keep your wits about you, as this is definitely not the upscale side of town, and you may just have one of your more memorable nights on the East African coast.
