Hikers who don't mind a relatively steep challenge will relish the opportunity to take on beautiful Mt. Longonot. This dormant stratovolcano is situated just 60 km northwest of Nairobi, with some pretty outstanding views of the Great Rift Valley offered from its 2,776 m high summit. If you're lucky you may also catch sight of a few zebras and giraffes along the way. The trail to and from the crater rim should take about 2-3 hours depending on your fitness level, but those in it for the long haul (i.e. ascending the summit and circling the rim) should expect more of a challenge and a few more hours' investment (roughly 8.5 km when all is said and done). On a clear day, it's one of your best options for a scenic and adventurous day-trip from the capital.
Note:Be advised: things can get pretty hot pretty fast on Longonot. Hikers are encouraged to pack plenty of water and enough sun screen to take on those formidable East African rays.
