Drive about 90 minutes north of Nairobi along the A2, heading towards Mt. Kenya National Park, and you'll come across the Savage Wilderness Whitewater Rafting Center. Impressive name, we know. Situated near the banks of Kenya's Tana River, this will be your ticket to what is probably the most memorable rafting and kayaking experience available in the country.
You see, the Tana is what's known as a "pool and drop river," meaning that you'll experience some intense rapids followed by a pool and a stretch of calm, scenic river paddling. So don't be too let down at the initial run of easy, class II and III rapids. They'll soon give way to some heart pounding IV and V's, complete with names like Captain's Folly and the Sphincter Flexor (you get the idea). All told, it's a fantastic way to spend a day or two away from the capital, taking in some wildlife while you navigate some truly intense rapids. Enjoy.
