Despite being home to over half a million people, Ipoh is not known having much in the way of nightlife. Although there are some clubs and a few areas with a decent concentration of bars (karoake, pub, lounge, etc.), the traditional lack of alcohol consumption due to Muslim customs is still largely the rule rather than the exception.
Which doesn't mean that there isn't some great nightlife; you just will need to know where to look. One area that is sure to please is Bandar Baru Medan, a neighborhood located between Jalan Tasek and the Utara-Selatan Highway (behind the big shopping center) northeast of city center. Ripe for a pub crawl, there are about a dozen nightclubs, bars, and karaoke joints concentrated here, with places like Voodoo, Partyland, and Lavish bringing the beats, while the swirl of conversation drives the oriental-style Jiu Bar and the cocktail-driven Brasserie. You may also find a strong collection of nightlife establishments southwest of city center near the Greentown Business Centre, particularly along Jalan Dato Seri Ahmad Said and Jalan Raja Ekram. Berlins's Bier Houz, Bricks and Barrels, and History Bistroz are known for great brews and beer gardens, while U.NION Club and Barcelona Lounge shoot for sophistication. GZ Hookah is a great place to hang out with a cloud of smoke in the air, while a handful of KTV's appeal to the karaoke crowd. There are other places scattered around the city, but the outlook isn't as promising if you wander outside the aforementioned areas.
Then again, if the main appeal of nightlife for you is socializing with the locals and experiencing the culture firsthand, then meander through Pasar Malam, Ipoh's night market. If you want to grab something local to eat or some unique curios, then this market, which is located in different places depending on the day of the week, is a great choice.
