Accessible from Johor Bahru by the newly built Senai-Desaru expressway, Pantai Desaru is a beach resort area that has experienced a renaissance of sorts since an initial boom and falling out of investment back in the 1980's.
A placid and quiet 22 km (14 mile) stretch of beach on the South China Sea, the resorts here are no frills and inexpensive, while the activities range from swimming to snorkeling along the largely untenanted sand. Join a hotel-based excursion to see the fireflies that congregate along the banks of Sungei Lebam if you're looking to do something a bit different. It's quite the spectacle!
Note:If you're looking to avoid monsoon season, visit Desaru from April to October.
